Virtual reality technology has been around for over a decade, but this particular application is rather novel and holds promise. It has long been recognized that the perception of pain is exacerbated by fear and anxiety. VR can theoretically reduce both. It utilizes a device this is relatively inexpensive, involves no medication, and therefore no side effects or possibility of dependency. With the increasing emphasis on non-opioid methods of pain control, VR has a future in pain management.
