Page 1 of 5 Therapeutic injections are usually a combination of a local anesthetic (for example Novocaine) and an anti-inflammatory steroid. Injections are sometimes referred to as "blocks" due to the blocking or numbing effect of the local anesthetic. The target of these injections is usually an inflamed structure that is, or might be, the source of the patient’s pain. Many times this is a portion of the spine, sometimes a nerve, or perhaps a joint or muscle.
