| Are you on narcotics? |
|
As some of you know, narcotics are pretty good acute pain relievers. They do a nice job for the pain of broken bones or tooth extractions for example. However, these “miracles of modern science” are not so miraculous for long term use. Did you know that continuous use of higher dose of narcotics can actually cause you to experience MORE (not less) pain? This phenomenon is called HYPERALGESIA, and is a huge and very common problem. Hyperalgesia looks a lot like fibromyalgia, with tenderness and pain everywhere, but more especially in the back and extremities. HYPERALGESIA once established, is very difficult to treat. Escalating doses of narcotic obviously make it worse. The only reliable treatment is to get off narcotics, sometimes with the help of Suboxone. This is something to think about if you currently take narcotics for chronic pain. You may wish to speak with your provider. |
