Treatment PhilosophyAt one end of the spectrum pain is simple, mild, transient and quickly responds to simple treatments. At the other end of the spectrum, chronic pain manifests as myriad biological and emotional dimensions or layers that require a comprehensive, mutually agreed upon plan of care. This plan of care, more often than not, employs multiple treatment modalities. Special Interests:Hugh's special focus lies in listening attentively to each patient’s unique pain story. "I put together a plan of action that targets the most aggravating pain generator first then, over time, addressing lower layer pain generators thereby helping my patients effectively manage their chronic pain. Some of the treatments I employ are spine and joint injections, physical therapy, and pharmacotherapy. I also have an ongoing interest in Radiofrequency Lesioning, Spinal Cord Stimulation and Vertebroplasty, utilizing referrals as necessary."
Professional JourneyHugh began his Anesthesia and Pain Management career in Tennessee at the urging of his Uncle Bob Cochran. He was further encouraged by Anesthesia Practitioners Bruce Calvin and Paul Ledoux to pursue a career as a Nurse Anesthetist. While earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, Hugh worked as a Nurse Intern on the Medical, Surgical and Cardiac ICUs at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. His mentors Tom Rone and Sue Crawford nourished his keen interest in invasive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation and caring for the needs of critically ill patients. During his training at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island School of Nurse Anesthesia, Hugh also worked on a Cardiothoracic ICU. After meeting the basic anesthesia training requirements, he further focused on Neurosurgical, Thoracic, Vascular and Obstetric anesthesia. He also developed a passion for Regional Anesthesia techniques. Returning to Tennessee in 1999, he worked as a Staff Anesthetist until 2005. Hugh was later recruited to Tyler, TX to be one of the 12 members of the East Texas Medical Center Level One Trauma Team. In 2007 he left Tyler, TX and moved to Richmond, TX to become the Assistant Director of Anesthesia at nearby Gulf Coast Medical Center. During the course of several years treating acute pain, Hugh became aware of an underserved population, those who deal with chronic pain. He realized that there is a great need for high quality, multidisciplinary pain care and that the needs of these patients are not well served by a unimodal approach. Joining PainCare gives him the combined resources he needs to be effective in helping his patients “get their life back.” Professional Certifications & Associations

"When not treating patients, I enjoy... spending time with my wife, family and friends, traveling, various outdoor activities, reading the Bible, playing music and thanking God for the gift of each new day.." |
