A
local anesthetic, lidocaine is useful for treating localized muscular
and nerve pain. The transdermal lidocaine comes in the form of a patch
and works by blocking the conduction of painful nerve impulses from the
pain generator to the brain. The patch is applied directly overlaying
the painful area where the medication is then absorbed through the skin
and into the underlying pain generating tissue. Transdermal lidocaine can be used to relieve the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia (residual pain from a shingles infection), myofascial pain, and rheumatoid arthritis.
