In addition to relieving depression, many antidepressant drugs relieve chronic pain. Even
when depression isn't a factor these drugs can work to relieve chronic
or severe pain in conditions such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid
arthritis, neuropathy and cancer pain. Often these drugs serve
a dual purpose in that it is not unusual for the patient suffering
chronic pain to experience some degree of depression as well. Another
important benefit of these drugs can be a marked improvement in the
patient's quality of sleep, which in turn helps to improve pain
tolerance.
