To my healthcare provider colleagues, At PainCare, we continue to provide the most current technology to help our patients. Some of the most difficult patients to treat are those with chronic migraines, fibromyalgia, and pain from traumatic brain injury. These are the patients who fail to obtain relief despite treatment with many other modalities. Finally, it appears that technology is catching up with their needs. We are pleased to announce that we are now offering Occipital Neuromodulation for these most recalcitrant patients. Occipital neuromodulation is based upon principles of spinal cord stimulation, which has been around for forty years, and involves the use of electrical fields to block transmission of pain signals. It represents an evolutionary step forward and these challenging patients are experiencing gratifying relief. To paraphrase our patients: "It's painless, it works, don't hesitate." We perform trials that last for up to one month. These consist of a subcutaneous procedure for prospective patients to see if this technology helps alleviate their pain. If the trial succeeds, the patients are then scheduled for a subcutaneous implantation of the electrodes and battery. It is analogous to a cardiac pacemaker, but for pain. If successful, patients will be weaned off their pain medications. This procedure was featured on the cover of the Health Section of the New Hampshire Sunday News on November 4th, 2007. (Read article) If you are interested in learning more about this innovative treatment for your patients' benefit, it would be my pleasure to present a CME lecture in your office. PainCare is accredited by the New Hampshire Medical Society Council on Education to provide Category I Continuing Medical Education. You can read more about my background and PainCare on our website www.painmd.com. We welcome your questions. Please do not hesitate to call about the procedure itself, or about the educational lecture we can offer you and your staff. Sincerely,
Joshua Greenspan, M.D.
