What is sciatica (lumbar radiculopathy)?"Sciatica" is the common or lay term for lumbar radiculopathy. Sciatica refers to compression, irritation, disease or dysfunction of the spinal nerve roots often causing pain, numbness, or weakness into the legs (the area innervated by the sciatic nerve). What are the causes?Sciatica is most typically caused by a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root. Less commonly, roots are compressed by an enlarged facet joint or slipped disc (spondylolisthesis). Is sciatica preventable?
Not entirely. Avoidance of a disc herniation is key. Proper lifting techniques, staying physically fit, maintaining ideal body weight and avoidance of smoking are all very helpful.
