Shelby had been living with migraines since she was 13, and finally feels her old self emerging. Sleeping better, more energy and shedding pounds, she's looking forward to a fuller life with her new implant. Post trial: Dr. Greenspan: What kind of pain were you having before the trial? Shelby: Chronic migraines. Dr. Greenspan: How long ago did you start having migraines? Shelby: When I was 13, and I'm 38 now. Dr. Greenspan: How often do you get migraines? Shelby: Before the trial? The second the injection wore off, so every day. Dr. Greenspan: When the trial electrodes were put under the skin, how long until you got relief? Shelby: 45 minutes! [laughs] Dr. Greenspan: Have you had a migraine since? Shelby: No. Dr. Greenspan: Any beneficial effects you've noticed. Shelby: Energy level, mood - much better, much happier. I've lost 9 lbs. Dr. Greenspan: Do you find that it's changing your appetite? Shelby: Less appetite. And I used to have insomnia, and I no longer have that. Dr. Greenspan: Do you use the special sleep program for nighttime? Shelby: Yes. Dr. Greenspan: And that's been working for you? Shelby: Yes, very well. Dr. Greenspan: What would you say to someone who is sitting on the fence, not sure whether to go forward with the trial? Shelby: My advice would be to "just do it." They have nothing to lose, everything to gain. They can get their life back and pain free. 3 weeks post-implant: Dr. Greenspan: How did the implant go? Shelby: Wonderful. Dr. Greenspan: How long after the implant did you start noticing some relief? Shelby: I woke up in the recovery room at York Hospital and they [the migraines] were gone, completely. Dr. Greenspan: When the trial electrodes were taken out, did your pain come back again? Shelby: Almost immediately, about 30 minutes. Dr. Greenspan: So the migraines came back full force, then. Shelby: As though I had never had the trial, unfortunately. Dr. Greenspan: So you had the implant, woke up in recovery, your pain was gone. You're doing great ever since? Shelby: Yes. Dr. Greenspan: Have you noticed any improvement in sleep again? Shelby: Sleeping like a baby, very focused at work, concentration good, energy level off the charts. I'm back to my old self. Dr. Greenspan: So everything the trial was doing for you, the implant has done for you as well. Shelby: Almost better, yes Dr. Greenspan: Do you feel that week by week things are getting better for you? Shelby: Yes, I do. Dr. Greenspan: How about your appetite? During the trial, you were losing weight. Shelby: I've lost about 19 lbs. total, since. Dr. Greenspan: So you find that your appetite is suppressed? Shelby: Decreased, yes. Smaller portions, making smarter choices. Dr. Greenspan: So you feel like your whole life has been transformed? Shelby: I do, I do. Dr. Greenspan: What would you tell somebody who is having second thoughts about this? Shelby: No second thoughts... just do it!
